Mountain – Nantucket Sleighride (To Owen Coffin)

Title: Nantucket Sleighride (To Owen Coffin) (track 03)

Artist: Mountain
Album: Nantucket Sleighride
Year: 1971
Label: Sony, Windfall

Lyrics:

Goodbye, little Robin-Marie
Don’t try following me
Don’t cry, little Robin-Marie
‘Cause you know I’m coming home soon

My ships’ leaving on a three-year tour
The next tide will take us from shore
Windlaced, gather in sail and spray
On a search for the mighty sperm whale

Fly your willow branches
Wrap your body round my soul
Lay down your reeds and drums on my soft sheets
There are years behind us reaching
To the place where hearts are beating
And I know you’re the last true love I’ll ever meet
And I know you’re the last true love I’ll ever meet

Starbuck’s sharpening his harpoon
The black man is playing his tune
An old salt’s sleeping his watch away
He’ll be drunk again before noon

Three years sailing on bended knee
We found no whales in the sea
Don’t cry, little Robin-Marie
‘Cause we’ll be in sight of land soon

Fly your willow branches
Wrap your body round my soul
Lay down your reeds and drums on my soft sheets
There are years behind us reaching
To the place where hearts are beating
And I know you’re the last true love I’ll ever meet
And I know you’re the last true love I’ll ever meet Mountain – Nantucket Sleighride (To Owen Coffin)

  1. Had this on vinyl in early 1970's….played it like 50 Gazillion times…. LOVED IT!…. Until I saw the lyrics here, I never bothered that I couldn't understand some of the words….I thought it was "leaving on Pier 3"!…. Who cares if you miss a word or 2, this music is SOLID as a MOUNTAIN!….
(BTW, Billy was a mountain, and Ethel was a tree growing off of his shoulder….

  2. So apparently 137 little bitches have watched and 👎 the tremendous the historic sound that is Mountain. Fuck those guys AmIRight??? 👍👍👍

  3. What is it with getting old that at every available opportunity you have to give your age?
Ah'm sixty-three an' ah still couldn't give a f**k! What a truly great bit of music this is.

  4. Onee of Rocks great songs so underated. I used to ask Malcolm Davis at WBAB Long Island N.Y. to play this for me. He was like " How do you know that song!" Then right before sign off he pressed the button on the turntable and away we went on the Nantucket Sleighride…..!

  5. Rest in Peace Brian Walden, presenter of London Weekend Television's Weekend World which used the last 50 seconds of this as its classic theme tune

  6. The Beatles-Cream- George Harrison-Felix Papparladi- The Parting Glass- The Pogues. See how I made that happen?

  7. Was given this album as a young kid. Wore out the turntable needle.
Been some 20 years since I last heard it.

    Straight into the catalogue !!

  8. Theme for an Imaginary Western was my favorite Mountain song from its release until early 1975 when I heard this and fell head over heels. My GF was a bit miffed because TfaIW was her favorite, too, whereas NS was her best friend's favorite, and suddenly we couldn't just leave TfaIW on repeat when snuggling or whatever.
Today? I can listen to either of them for hours. And often do- whether the songs or their original albums.
